About Conservation Check
Conservation Check is a free tool for checking whether a home or plot in England is in a conservation area, and what that means for building work. Enter a postcode, move the pin onto the building, and see the conservation area, Article 4 directions, listed buildings, protected tree zones and flood zone around it on one map.
Where the data comes from
Every check reads the national planning datasets published by the government at planning.data.gov.uk, which bring together records from local planning authorities and Historic England. The data is published under the Open Government Licence. If the live service is down, we answer from our own copy of the same national data and say so on the page. Council coverage of the national data is still incomplete, so a blank result is a good sign, not a guarantee.
How the planning rules are written
The rules on this site summarise the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015, Schedule 2, as it applies to conservation areas (article 2(3) land), and section 211 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 for trees in conservation areas. They are written in plain English and checked against the legislation and gov.uk guidance. They are general guidance, not legal advice, and your local planning authority has the final word.
What we do not do
- We are not a council and this is not an official local authority search.
- We do not store the postcodes or locations you check.
- We do not sell personal data or use advertising cookies.
Reports and payments
The free check is free with no account. The optional £4.99 property report is a dated record for one exact location. Payments are processed by Dodo Payments as merchant of record, which also handles VAT. See the refund policy and terms.
